Brian Reid joins Nuneaton

Brief Directions by Road
M1 and then M6 to junction 3 and take the A444 towards Nuneaton. Continue towards the town centre after passing the George Eliot Hospital on your left. On reaching a roundabout turn right at 2nd exit onto Avenue Road A254. Continue along this road going across one roundabout (the road becomes Eastborough Road although still the A254) over the railway lines and then a second roundabout (with the Crows Nest pub on your right). At the next roundabout turn left into Townsend Drive (signposted Nuneaton RFC/Attleborough Fields Industrial Estate). Then turn right into Liberty Way for the stadium.

Car Parking
There is car parking available at the ground for £2.00 but this is limited. The Industrial estate opposite also offers the same deal.

Directions by Train
Nuneaton Railway Station is about a 30 minutes walk from the ground, gotta be a cab ride, made for sharing. The station is served by trains from London Euston.

Eating and Drinking Locally
The Crows Nest on Crowhill Way is the nearest pub to the ground and is a good 10 minute walk away. The Acorn is another safe bet. Although the Football Club does have a Bar, it is not available to away fans. The adjacent Rugby Club has its own Clubhouse which can be accessed from the Liberty Way car park and welcomes away fans.
Question: Why did the Liberty snack bars throw lots of pies away last week. Answer: Because there was Nuneaton.

Ground Description
In 2007 Nuneaton Borough moved to this new home after spending 90 years at their former Manor Park home. The Club went into liquidation in 2008 and were subsequently reformed as Nuneaton Town.

The ground has a fairly basic lay out with a main stand that holds a shade over 500. The remainder of the round is terracing with two small covered areas at both ends, very similar to the Hive in fact. The Loans 2 Go Stand will be our home and holds up to 1,000. Opposite the main stand is a shallow uncovered terrace bringing the capacity to around 4,500.

Previous Meetings and Memories
Last seasons visit in April 2014 featured a winning goal from loanee defender Valentin Gjokaj.

We have pitted our wits against the original Nuneaton Borough dozens of times since the mid sixties, the highlights? A vital 2-0 (Tony O'Hare and George Cleary) win away in the Southern League Premier in April 1979 which started an end of season mini run of five wins and two draws in nine games which effectively won the club a place in the newly formed Alliance Premier League by finishing 13th. A fine 4-1 win at Underhill in September 1986 which featured a brilliant Steve Mahoney hatrick and a stunning Ben Strevens scoring a hatrick within the first 15 minutes in the 3-2 win at Borough in November 2001.

Celebrity Watch
Author George Elliot (Mary Ann Evans) lived in Nuneaton as did Larry Grayson the camp comic. Olympic athlete Tessa Sanderson lived just a javelin throw away from the old Manor Park ground. English social activist Mary Whitehouse was born here while rock chick and actress Patsy Kensit supports Nuneaton. Nuneaton town centre allegedly presented us with the world’s first ever outdoor condom machine, so now you know, tell your Mates!
